Bread for the Journey
Soup Kitchen and Food Pantry

Food insecurity is a real challenge for many neighbors in McElderry Park. Access to full service supermarkets and healthy food that is affordable can be tricky.  And some neighbors are vulnerable with lack of steady income or safe places to live.  Bread for the Journey is one way we respond to these challenges, creating food access and building community.

Through multiple partners including Maryland Food Bank , neighbors shop for food at the client choice pantry.  We break bread together at the soup kitchen every week.  And we even learn to prepare budget friendly healthy food through cooking classes together.  All of this work is designed to bring food security to families and create opportunities for deeper connections.

Because of the pandemic, and at the recommendation of health officials, the pantry and the soup kitchen have both become grab and go outdoor activities.   The number of families impacted by the crisis means Bread for the Journey has moved from serving 20 -35 families a week in the pantry to over 500 families a week.  And in the soup kitchen, instead of 180 lunches being served, there are over 400 lunches served each week.  We are grateful for the opportunity to serve, but look forward to being able to sit down and break bread together again soon.
